In the United States FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) noticed this issue and came up a set of guidelines for open communication between emergency systems.

Our Solution Provides Open Communiciations and Interoperability

Mircom’s "Open Graphic Navigator" (OpenGN - MNS/ECS Monitoring Workstation) provides a PC-based monitoring solution for the MNS/ECS/FA monitoring and control.

The OpenGN solution has been developed with a similar vision as the FEMA's NG 0004 - "National Incident Management System (NIMS) Communications and Information Management Standards" guideline.

This ensures our solution follows industry standards for open communication and interoperability for emergency communication.

How It Works

OpenGN is built on a finite state machine event processor that accepts event inputs from a source controller (Flex-Net MNS/ECS/FA Control Units), processes the events in a logic engine, and updates multiple display and non-display communication interfaces to provide real-time updates on an emergency situation.

The abstraction layer between the source product (Flex-Net MNS/ECS/FA Control Units), and the OpenGN workstation application means that proprietary internal protocols of various manufacturers can be supported through the development of XML (Extensible Markup Language) based software adapters.

The XML output format to the OpenGN is set as an industry standard. The creation of a new adapter involves simply mapping internal messages to the standardized XML output. These adapters, the interface protocol, and the OpenGN configuration utility all leverage XML to achieve the openness and integration.

XML technology provided in OpenGN offers the advantages of efficiency, scalability and interoperability with Modbus, LonTalk and other common open protocols.

Standards Compliant

The OpenGN solution complies with the following voluntary and authority mandated codes and standards:

  • Underwriters Laboratories Inc. ANSI/UL 864, "Standard for Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems,"
  • Underwriters Laboratories Of Canada CAN/ULC-S527 Control Units for Fire Alarm Systems
  • Conforms to Modbus Application Protocol Specification V1.1b. as an open protocol. Note: The Modbus TCP protocol specification has been recently submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for acceptance
  • LonTalk as defined by ANSI Standard ANSI/CEA 709.1. Control Networking requirements
