Al Hazm Mall, located in Doha, Qatar, is a premier luxury shopping destination known for its elegant European-inspired architecture and high-end retail experience. Opened in 2017, the mall houses an exclusive mix of premium international brands. Due to its intricate design and upscale environment, the implementation of a robust fire alarm system was critical to ensure safety during construction and ongoing operations. Mircom’s fire alarm solutions were selected for their compliance with stringent safety standards, offering optimal protection for shoppers, staff, and property.
Project Background & Scope
The project entailed installing a comprehensive fire alarm system across seven blocks, each with four floors. A total of nine FlexNet Series integrated fire alarm and smoke control panels were networked via copper cables, supplemented by 32 additional panels for individual retail units. To support real-time oversight, the OpenGN 3D graphical monitoring system was deployed. Integration with the Building Management System (BMS) was enabled via FlexNet’s native BACnet over IP feature. The full system was commissioned in 2016, ahead of the mall’s opening in May 2017.
Challenge
The mall’s elevated location and classical Italianate design, including hand-crafted Tuscan marble and intricate interiors, posed installation challenges. Preserving aesthetic integrity while implementing comprehensive fire coverage required a technically advanced yet unobtrusive solution.
The Mircom Solution
Mircom’s FlexNet Series addressed the unique challenges of Al Hazm Mall by providing a highly compliant, integrated fire and smoke control system. The UL Listed OpenGN software enabled precise real-time 3D monitoring, supporting quick response and maintenance. Native BACnet over IP facilitated seamless integration with BMS. Beam detectors were employed to safeguard large, open spaces such as glass-domed atriums.
Benefits and Value Added
Mircom’s certified products met all NFPA standards and Civil Defense regulations, delivering a cost-effective and reliable solution. The BB-5014 large enclosure streamlined operations by consolidating UL864 and UKKL listed smoke control system displays. OpenGN software empowered facility management with advanced event handling, while native BACnet connectivity eliminated the need for external protocol converters, reducing installation time and complexity.
