Located in Mesaimeer, just 14 km from Doha, the Asian City Workers Accommodation also known as Labour City was developed to improve living standards for Qatar’s foreign workforce. Spanning 1.1 million square meters, the site houses up to 68,000 workers across 55 dormitory buildings, supported by clinics, police stations, and mosques. It is one of several projects supporting Qatar’s infrastructure growth, including preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Project Background & Scope
The site includes 30 dormitory buildings and 14 ancillary facilities (e.g., gatehouses, mosques, pump rooms). The fire safety system consists of 44 Secutron MMX Series network addressable panels. These are monitored centrally via the OpenGN graphical workstation. Fire safety equipment includes 30 standalone fire telephone panels (QMT-5300A) and LED annunciator panels (MGD-32). The installation incorporates over 25,000 field devices, including detectors, manual stations, notification devices, and interface modules.
Challenge
Covering such a vast area with a centralized control and monitoring system was a primary challenge along with the requirement for a centralized graphical workstation at the fire command. Equally critical was the requirement for visual annunciator panels on every floor, enabling quick fire location identification during emergencies.
The mircom solution
Mircom implemented a fiber-optic peer-to-peer network connecting all 44 MMX panels. OpenGN 3D software enabled centralized, real-time control of all fire safety systems. The MMX Series’ flexible programming features allowed configuration through a single panel without system downtime. Additionally, the system was built for future scalability, enabling easy expansion or upgrades.
Benefits and Value Added
The solution fulfilled all client and regulatory requirements, including UL certification. OpenGN allowed centralized control with real-time local or remote monitoring. The multicolor LED annunciator panels enhanced visibility and usability, ensuring rapid incident identification and response.
Conclusion
This landmark project delivers safe, compliant, and scalable housing for 68,000 workers. Through innovative technologies and robust design, Mircom provided a reliable fire safety infrastructure for one of Qatar’s largest accommodation complexes, supporting long-term operational safety and future adaptability.
